This case study explores my redesign of the Nifty Gateway Drops page to accommodate a rapidly growing number of NFT drops from the new publishers. The challenge was to create an inclusive platform with strategic content exposure and discovery.

Inclusively Present All Drops

Inclusively Present All Drops
The Drops page previously served only one publisher, Nifty Gateway Curated, an in-house publisher that put Nifty Gateway on the map. To increase supply and demand, Nifty Gateway launched a new product called Publishers, which would open up the ability to publish NFT drops to approved third parties.
With the Publishers launch, the Drops page had to expand to accommodate to a rapidly growing number of drops from all the new publishers.
The objective was to redesign the Drops page to inclusively present all drops released by all publishers on Nifty Gateway.

Mental Model

Mental Model
Early in the process, I collaborated closely with the co-founder to redefine the vision of the Drops product, in light of the Publishers launch. One particular idea we discussed was a parallel to an art fair. In this analogy, the different booths housing galleries and curators are equivalent to the various publishers, each contributing a unique and diverse array of NFT releases, with Nifty Gateway Curated being the flagship publisher.
Key Takeaways:
The art fair mental model greatly helped me begin conceptualizing the structure of the new Drops page, in a way that presented all the new publishers while ensuring Nifty Gateway Curated remained the focal point.

After understanding the new Drops product vision using the mental model of an ‘art fair’, I quickly drew out what would be new sitemap to get an overview of the changes.

The redesign heavily involved different functions in the company, so I decided to interview other teams to get their thoughts. These interviews were valuable because they helped me with some of my design decisions later on.

The art fair model helped me begin to conceptualize the Drops page redesign, and the internal interviews revealed key insights: proper status labeling, optimizing visibility, utilizing calendar, and implementing ranking models.

One thing I realized amidst the research phase was how similar the new direction of Drops was to the streaming services out there, and so I studied their UI and how they present their content.

I began the wireframe process by mapping out the page structure, using a row pattern like of the streaming services. To make this work specifically for Nifty Gateway, some rows had hand-curated content, and some updated automatically using time, views, or sales.

A few options were explored for the hero section of the page, Featured Drops, and the option that allowed multiple drops to be featured at once stood out to us.

After a few rounds of reviews, we agreed on a few design options as well as narrowed down our content rows and their order:
1. Featured Drops
2. Live Drops
3. Upcoming Drops
4. Trending Publishers
5. Featured Publishers
After having the overall structure nailed down, I aggressively iterated the full page UI, trying out typography, colors, visual hierarchy, etc.

The art fair analogy kept my focus on the distinction between publishers, especially Nifty Gateway Curated content. This encouraged me to explore more UI options to show off each publisher as well as coming up with a badge to differentiate drops published by Nifty Gateway Curated.

What I Learned
Because we prioritized content curation using the rows layout, we faced challenges in maintaining content visibility when the number of drops exceeded our projection. I learned that designing for scale can be challenging when growth is uncertain, and I believe the key is to prioritize flexibility in content layout.

Given the close dependency on the performance of the Publishers product, we closely monitored the Drops page’s adaptability to the increasing volume of drops from new publishers and began testing out different content layouts to accommodate the rapidly growing number of drops.
