With our design strategy as a guide, I focused on streamlining the device setup process. Given Kangaroo’s diverse range of smart devices to be released, including sensors, doorbells, cameras, and sirens, the primary challenge was ensuring a consistent setup process across all these different devices.
To tackle this, I took a modular approach to the user flow, dividing it into distinct groups of steps that would be consistently applicable to all devices.
My goal with this approach was to help users set up correctly without friction and make the setup steps learnable and reusable for other devices.

I first learned about the signature moment idea in the book Microinteractions by Dan Saffer, “Signature Moments build customer loyalty and increase adoption.” An example he used was the early Instagram (+) button at the bottom of the screen to create a new post.
This idea piqued my interest and when I had the opportunity to design the microinteraction of arming and disarming your home on the Kangaroo mobile app. My goal here was to create a memorable experience that brings peace of mind to the users.

Inspired by “Beauty and the Beast” and “Harry Potter”, I came up with the concept of a protective dome encapsulating a house to symbolize your home is armed.

I decided to take it one step further by creating these house illustrations to customize your home, this level of personalization helped set the Kangaroo mobile app experience apart of its competitors.

The Kangaroo app had overall good ratings on both iOS and Android. However, because of the many discrepancies among different Android phones, there were issues with pairing, connection stability, and UI consistency.
